As we head into the new school year, remember that you can always stay updated with our online calendars. With just a couple of clicks you can link our events section, along with any changes, additions, and cancellations, automatically to your calendar. You'll have to go to colemanschools.net (You won't be able to use our app for this.) then select your school preference and click the link. Athletes and parents, you'll want to make sure you link from the Jr/Sr High page (second photo) to keep your calendar updated to game schedules. You can even link to directions to some of those harder to find locations.

Only 11 days left before the August 3rd Coleman Schools' Bond vote either in person or by Absentee Ballot! Anyone who is a registered voter in the Coleman Community Schools' District, whether a taxpayer or not, can vote. If you haven't yet had a chance to look at the factual information for yourself, you can do so at our website, www.colemanschools.net and click on the Bond Information link at the top of the home page or at this link: https://www.colemanschools.net/o/coleman-cs/page/bond-information--11h There you will find: updated Frequently Asked Questions (more to be added on Monday), short video tours of the buildings' current state and project plans, estimates, Conceptual Designs, a Tax Calculator and much more. Take a few minutes to look through them. We have recently heard of situations where people have been told their taxes would raise significantly, but after going on the Tax Calculator, it was much less than they were told. Please take the chance to look into it for yourself or call the Board Office at 989.465.6060 and we will be happy to walk you through it.

Q: How will I know how much I would be paying in taxes per month if this bond were to pass? A: You can go to the Bond link at the top of the District Homepage www.colemanschools.net. In that page is a Tax Calculator (also at this link: https://pfmtaxcalc.com/ColemanCommunitySchools/disclaimer.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fColemanCommunitySchools%2fdefault.aspx ) which will determine the highest calculation for your property taxes by year, month and day. Some mills of this total calculation will fall off over time, reducing the amount of taxes per taxpayer. This tax calculator information is ONLY seen by the person entering the information.

Q: How does our district’s debt levy compare to the schools around us? A: Most school districts in Michigan address facility and transportation needs with a bond or sinking fund proposal. Currently, as is illustrated by the chart, Coleman is levying the lowest amount of many schools in the area and our size. If this bond proposal is approved on August 3rd, our total mills would increase to an estimated average rate of 7.55 mills over the term of the bond. This would still put us under or even with what at least 6 other local districts our size levy, inclusive of those in the image provided as well as Meridian, Bullock Creek and Harrison which are levying 7 mills, 7 mills and 4.3 mills, respectively.

First, second and third graders are working on their reading skills in the SPARKS Summer Program. They have some guided reading time with the teachers, some silent reading time with books of their choice to practice the skills taught during the guided reading time and then they have a chance to read cards and build sentences. The "Kids Read Now" students are integrated on Tuesdays to work on these skills as well.

Don't forget to VOTE August 3rd or anytime before then by Absentee Ballot anytime by contacting your Township/City Clerk. A Coleman Schools Bond Proposal will be on the ballot. Q: Why is a new auditorium necessary? A: The current auditorium, as with all of the school, has been well cared for by the community, staff and students at Coleman and used to the greatest extent possible. The roof, boilers, office area and carpeting has been replaced over time. However, after generations of use, items are worn and the space fits needs of the community and learners from several generations previous, not those of today. Coleman Schools is fortunate to have many people involved and supporting our students at events. No matter how many chairs are put in the auditorium and cafeteria for elementary or jr./sr. high events, there are typically 80-90 people left standing. The current auditorium does not provide enough storage and changing space for drama, choir, band. All other spaces in the district are smaller than the current auditorium. A new auditorium would provide the necessary space for all attendees to sit in tiered seating for elementary, jr./sr. high and community events, being able to see and hear what is taking place on stage. More events could be held in our own facilities and students can learn in the space daily for band, choir, drama and other presentation practices. Each of these groups would have space for materials and equipment that is not available presently. Additional community events could be held in a new space because of the area available. At the same end of the building, some additional classroom space would be added to support future programs and the band/choir/arts classrooms. Sometimes it's just nice to hang out with your new and old friends at recess. Coleman students get a chance to do that daily during the SPARKS/ Summer Extended Learning programs, using sidewalk chalk or the Gaga Ball pit that was installed this past spring.

Each 5th-12th grade student attending Coleman's Summer Extended Learning Program was able to try out and then compete for a prize with the Merrill Institute Table Top Welder recently while learning more about the trade.

Vote Tuesday, August 3rd, or now by Absentee Ballot from our Township/City Clerk. A bond proposal for Coleman Schools is on the ballot. Why are renovated/additional classrooms and recaptured space important in this bond? Coleman teachers work to support group work, problem-solving, literacy circles and cooperative learning which is difficult in the many of the current triangular-shaped classrooms. Recapturing the open spaces allows for more programming for students similar to what has been held over the past 7 years with Zoology, Ag/STEM, Multi-Media, Choir, American Sign Language, Financial Literacy, space for Dual Enrollment & Early/Middle College studies and more. Our current space does not allow for future growth or space currently needed for classrooms, office, conference rooms and storage.
