A couple weeks before Thanksgiving break, each K-2 student received a bag containing three books from Reading Is Fundamental, delivered by Amazon volunteers! Parents were invited into the building to read with their student during breakfast time.

Ms. Boulis' 5th graders went on a field trip to Chippewa Nature Center earlier this month. There they explored aquatic life at the pond, using microscopes, and identifying them through a game.

Welcome to two new staff members! Welcome Mr. Alex Kimball, Varsity Wrestling Coach, and Ms. Lexie Taylor, JH Competitive Cheer Coach! Wrestling is back in Coleman and we are excited to get students signed up. Coach Kimball has extensive wrestling background and wrestled himself from a young age through high school and then was a referee while he was in college. He has a genuine love and knowledge for the sport and is looking to build a connection between the youth wrestlers and the high school team while growing leaders and team players in our students. Please help him feel welcome! Lexie owns her own ABA business, working with students during the day and has a long-time background with Cheer. She wants to bring an excitement for the sport to our students and work with the other coaches to build skills in our athletes from the younger to the older ages. Welcome and congratulations, Coach Taylor!

Spanish 2 students studied Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), earlier this month! It is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd annually in Mexico. Students researched the celebration in the weeks leading up to it and created an ofrenda in the high school showcase. An ofrenda is an offering/altar prepared to honor and celebrate the lives of those loved ones who have passed on. It often includes water, salt, pan de muerto, marigolds, candles, and things our loved ones enjoyed during their lives. It is believed that Día de Muertos is the one night per year that our loved ones can come back to visit (like in the movie Coco!). Thanks for all the hard work you put into this project, Comets!

High School Art Class recently finished their Elements of Art projects! Students explored the seven elements (line, shape, color, form and value) where they picked one cohesive image that was divided into seven sections to illustrate the seven elements. Students now understand that the elements of art are the basic components that artists use to create visual compositions. Now our high school students understand how to analyze and appreciate art by identifying and describing how artists use these elements to express themselves through different techniques and stylization. Here's just a few of the students' projects. So beautiful and interesting to look at!

Go MAD, or "Go Make a Difference," is an annual event at Northwood University that encourages students, staff, and faculty to volunteer in the Midland community. This year, our 5th graders got a chance to visit the University and try out a lot of different sports! While the students I interviewed were mostly raving about the super cool cafeteria, they also said all the volunteers at the University were really nice and they learned a lot about "Putting First Things First" and working together. They also got to meet the mascot and snapped a cool pic!

Miss Dittenber and Ms. Cederstrom’s classes got to wear the school rubber boots for their recent rainy trip to the Chippewa Nature Center. These were purchased through a grant specific to our Ag K-7 program, received several years ago. We were able to purchase enough boots for all K, 1st and 2nd graders to use on these trips and when they are working in the land lab, greenhouse or barn. Perfect for the rainy weather! ☔

With the generous help of several Corteva volunteers, Ag 1 students were able to finish the hoophouse construction in our Land Lab. Plans for future use of the space will include growing early season strawberries and tomatoes. Students applied lots of math principles throughout the project and demonstrated a great deal of teamwork.

On Monday, the NHS group helped the VFW put up the flags for Veterans Day. After they installed the flags, the VFW members fed them a breakfast of pancakes, sausage and eggs. Then many of the men shared stories with us of their time in the military.
