Coleman Elementary School would like to recognize and thank Corteva Philanthropy. Corteva has awarded a $2,000 grant allowing for partial funding of visits by Chippewa Nature Center (CNC) Educators to our classrooms this year. During these visits the CNC Educators and our Teachers partner to integrate Agriscience skills into the Michigan Science standards. Watch for pictures to come in the future and thank you to Corteva Philanthropy!

Culinary Arts students were working on setting up front of the house last week. How did they do?

Mrs. Torreano has launched her "1,000 Cranes" project in her JH SEL class a couple of weeks ago. Every student has successfully completed at least one origami crane! Some students have already made more and have become project ambassadors to help lead the initiative. This project is based on the Japanese legend that anyone who folds 1,000 paper cranes will be granted either a lifetime of happiness or one wish. While the goal is to make 1,000 cranes, the students are also practicing mindfulness, extending their ability to concentrate on tasks, helping other students, and improving self confidence through learning new skills that may seem hard at first.

Absentee ballots are available now- don't forget to get out and vote for the Coleman Community Schools Bond Proposal for our students.

The last week of September was Midland County’s Neighboring Week -- and our elementary students celebrated it! They discussed their neighborhoods and how they can be kind neighbors. Then, they decorated a house to add to our school neighborhood bulletin board. Even Deputy Hodges joined in on the fun!

There will be no school for Elementary or Jr/Sr High students and staff tomorrow, Friday, 10.6.2023. Picture Day at the Jr/Sr High School will be rescheduled. Varsity football will still travel to Merrill tomorrow for the game. Students who are transported to the ESA Special Education programs will still be provided transportation.
Students who attend CTE programs at other schools as part of the consortium can still attend those programs if they choose and have transportation.
We hope by getting this to you as quickly as possible, it will help with your planning.
At 2:30 this afternoon, we lost water at the Jr/Sr High School due to a maintenance situation with our backflow system and a leak that was quickly addressed by our maintenance crew. We greatly appreciate their quick action to limit the issue. The main water supply to the whole building is shut down until this issue can be repaired. The company has already been in the building and parts are being overnighted. We anticipate repairs will be completed tomorrow, but not until late morning/early afternoon.
With the Jr/Sr High closed tomorrow, we will also have the Elementary students stay home; we would not meet our attendance requirements to count the school day tomorrow.

The Health Department will be hosting an immunization clinic at the Jr/Sr High School! Check out the flier for more info. Also -- don't forget to fill out the correct attached consent forms if you or your student will be receiving any immunizations. There is a consent form for preschool/kindergarteners, and one for adolescents, so make sure you select the right one! This week is all about Custodians/Maintenance Staff. These guys work so hard every day to help all of us out. They keep things running as efficiently as possible, ensure our facilities are safe, and reflect our Comet Pride.
Please reach out to each of them (Troy, Matt, Jim, Dan, Jason S., Jason H., and Wade) at some point this week. Drop them a quick note, say a little thank you, or give them a small token of appreciation... or if you have their cell number, maybe send them a fun text for a change!

We've had a few new staff members join us recently -- please help us to welcome them!
Ms. Amanda Mahler, a Speech & Language Pathologist, joins us about 7 hours a week to support part of Mrs. Winslow's caseload of students, which is high this year (which says a lot because Sandy works SO hard!). Ms. Mahler was highly recommended and works with the ESA in preschool and other areas as part of her role there. She will be a great addition and support.
Ms. Lauren Hansen is joining us as a paraprofessional in the Responsibility Center/Proactive Support position at the Jr/Sr High. Ms. Hansen is a graduate of Jenison High and Aquinas College, now getting her Masters in Counseling. She has worked with students with ODD and Autism, has a background in ABA therapy, and worked in before and after school programs among other jobs.
Mr. Kris Anderson is our new Kindergarten teacher! Mr. Anderson previously taught 1st, 2nd and 5th grades and really loves working with the younger students. He has a strong background in project-based learning and strives to make learning fun and make connections with the students and his team while showing strong gains in student achievement.
Mr. Anderson has taken over Mrs. Katie Staley's classroom, whose family is moving up north. Mrs. Staley has connected with many students and families in her time at Coleman and her knowledge, efforts and care are greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mrs. Staley!

Back in August, the elementary school received a special donation of 384 backpacks from Costco of Midland, enough for each student! Each backpack included a few school supplies for students to use, as well. We are super appreciative of this donation that helped to lessen the hardships of back-to-school season for our families, especially those families with multiple children in the household. We are extremely grateful for this opportunity to partner with Costco and find ways to make it easier to support our students in their learning.
Costco's backpack program is a part of their Commitment to Communities initiative. Since 1993, Costco has donated over 7 million backpacks all over the world. Community partnerships such as this are important for our students. When students see that those in the community care about them, it can inspire them and show that their educational success matters and is important.
Thanks again to Costco of Midland for the generous donation that helped to kick off our new school year on a great note!
