6th graders visited Chippewa Nature Center to explore ways animals adapt to their environment. Students created a habitat for their ”critter” using fluff, feathers, and fat. They measured their critters' temperature, built their habitat, and placed them outside. Students were then given an animal and explored the forest looking for food their animal could forage in the winter. After about 30 minutes, students retrieved their "critters" and measured their temperatures again. The least amount of temperature loss proved to be a good habitat.
At the February Board of Education meeting, a few of Mr. Liechty and Mrs. Pelletier's 3rd graders gave a presentation about their trip to the State capitol.
Girls' Bowling Update: On Saturday, February 17, the Coleman Girls' Bowling Team competed in the MSAC conference singles tournament at Sheridan Lanes. Kapre Lynch bowled amazingly and finished 1st in the event! After the 3-game qualifying round, she was seeded 3rd for the elimination bracket. In the first round of single elimination, Kapre beat a St. Charles girl by 3 points, and then the next round beat a Breckenridge girl by 2 pins, then won the championship match by 6 pins over a Carson City girl. During the day, she bowled high games of 192, 154, and 150. Two other Comet girls made it to the elimination bracket. Charisma Gingerich bowled high games of 148 and 133 and was seeded 10th, while Amelia Schwartz was seeded 15th. Fantastic job, ladies!!! #ColemanCometPride #growingforthefuture

Each week, Coleman staff members recognize each other for going above and beyond for colleagues, students or the District in some way. We also know we have a lot of students who do the same. Mr. Brown, Science/Coding teacher shared this recent "Shout-Out" about one of his students, Sara Husted.
"This may be unconventional for a shout-out but I had a new student start today 8 weeks into 8th grade coding. I knew they were coming today and was trying to plan well to get them up to speed.
"While we were trying to decide the new student's seat, Sara Husted offered to have the student sit next to her and her seat partner. Before I knew it, Sara was advocating for the student and came to me asking for Google classroom login, and to send her the invite for the coding online classroom and was showing the student how to do some things with coding.
"I am proud to see our Comets lead like this and I hope there is a way that we can recognize her for stepping up and helping a new student transition to our school. Whether that be a shout out or not, I would like you to be aware of this student being a great citizen without anyone requesting it. I am proud of the compassion, understanding and maturity that was on full display. I just wanted to recognize Sara Husted for this." ~ David Brown, Teacher

The Comet boys brought home more points Saturday 1/27 in a double header against St. Charles and Breckenridge. Jacob Butters brought home 3 points for Coleman with 3 out of 4 matches above his season average. Two other bowlers got their personal highest ever match scores - one of which was Donnie Husted with a 135! The Boy's team is showing personal growth and improvement weekly!
We had two Comets PR on 2/1 : Joe VanSickle with 144 and Ethan Olivares with 152! On 1/30, Jacob Butters put together 5 games in a row matching his 232 PR with an average of 189.4! This is an indication of being a contender for states this year! Give a Coleman Comet bowler a fist bump for their hard work this year so far!
Our Comet bowling teams were at St. Charles again 2/10 for a team tournament. The boys placed 4th in the event, however Joe VanSickle was able to PR with a 169 including a Turkey (3 strikes in a row!) in our second to last Peterson match that afternoon! Way to go Joetato chip! Go Comets!

It's tax season. Make sure you consider these Tax Credits:
Child Tax Credit (CTC): The CTC is a credit that may reduce your tax by as much as $2,000 for each child who qualifies you for the credit. To qualify, the child must be a U.S. citizen under age 17; have a Social Security number; be claimed as a dependent on the taxpayer's tax return; and more. Use the IRS Interactive Tax Assistant tool to determine eligibility: Does My Child/Dependent Qualify for the Child Tax Credit or the Credit for Other Dependents? Other Dependent Credit (ODC): The ODC is a credit that may reduce your tax by as much as $500 for each eligible dependent. The person is claimed as a dependent on your return; the person can’t be used by you to claim the CTC or Additional CTC; the person was a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien. Again, use the IRS Interactive Tax Assistant tool to determine eligibility: Does My Child/Dependent Qualify for the Child Tax Credit or the Credit for Other Dependents?
Note: The credit amount for family’s CTC or ODC may be reduced if their modified adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than $400,000 for married filing jointly filing status or $200,000 for all other filing statuses.
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC): One refundable tax credit for moderate- and low-income families is the Earned Income Tax Credit. The IRS estimates there are millions of workers who qualify but don't claim the EITC - missing out on thousands of dollars every year. The EITC is as much as $3,995 when claiming one child, $6,604 when claiming two children, and $7,430 when claiming three or more children. Use the EITC Assistant to learn if you're eligible for the tax credit. For more detailed information see: Publication 596, Earned Income Credit.
Note: Adjusted gross income limits are used to qualify families for EITC.
Child and Dependent Care Credit: Taxpayers who paid someone to care for their child, spouse or dependent so they can work, be a full-time student or look for work may be able to reduce their tax by claiming the Child and Dependent Care Credit. The total expenses that you may use to calculate the credit may not be more than $3,000 (for one qualifying individual) or $6,000 (for two or more qualifying individuals). Use the IRS Interactive Tax Assistant tool: Am I Eligible to Claim the Child and Dependent Care Credit? Back when we had snow, 45 students from the SPARKS and IGNITE after school group traveled to Snow Snake for some winter fun.
Culinary students recently had the opportunity to showcase their program to a group of potential future culinary students. They provided a variety of breakfast options, created a number of edible garnishes, and hosted a whipped cream relay!
Thank you to Midland Area Community Foundation and Clare-Gladwin RESD 21st Century Ignite for the opportunity to update some of the furniture in the Jr./Sr. High School Media Center. The furniture allows for flexible, comfortable seating, matching students' learning styles, sizes, and needs. It's already well-used and greatly appreciated.
