Three students from Coleman Junior-Senior High were named local winners in the 55th annual America & Me Essay Contest, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. The three eighth grade students, who earned the first, second, and third place awards for their school, are Kendall Allen, first, Parker Klopf, second, and Sara Husted, third. All three
students received an award certificate for their achievement.
As the schoolโs first place winner, Kendallโs name will also be engraved on a plaque for
permanent display at the school. In addition, her essay will advance to the state level of
competition. Those winners will be announced later in the spring.
Several thousand eighth grade students from over 200 Michigan schools participated in the 2023-2024 America & Me Essay Contest. The topic of the contest was โMy Personal Michigan Hero.โ Started in 1968 and open to all Michigan eighth grade students, the contest encourages Michigan youth to explore the greatness of America and its people. As the sponsor of the contest, Farm Bureau Insurance has earned eleven national awards. Congratulations to these students for their excellence in writing!

Have you noticed a few new faces around here? We'd like to officially welcome new staff members Chef Jacob Moore and Mrs. Rachel Hamina to our district!
Chef Jacob Moore is our new Culinary instructor! He started working alongside Chef Andy, who was subbing in the position for us this school year. Chef Jacob is going to be a great asset with our students. He has immediately begun building relationships with them, has a strong knowledge of how to teach different people using different strategies, and has jumped in full force learning about the program and is excited to continue building it. We're excited to have him on board! Chef Andy will still be a part of our team, coming in from time to time to provide some of his expertise and support what Chef Jacob has planned. Please help Chef Jacob feel welcome!
Mrs. Rachel Hamina started in our Student Support Specialist (formerly Counselor) role back in February. Mrs. Hamina has worked with college students in the area of course selection and competency, spent time in an academy working with students with IEPs and 504 plans, and has been serving in her most recent role as an MCAN Advisor in Bullock Creek (same position as Mr. Zink does for us). Can't wait for you to meet her!

Each week, Coleman staff members recognize each other for going above and beyond for colleagues, students or the District in some way. We also know we have a lot of students who do the same. Mr. Brown, Science/Coding teacher shared this recent "Shout-Out" about one of his students, Sara Husted.
"This may be unconventional for a shout-out but I had a new student start today 8 weeks into 8th grade coding. I knew they were coming today and was trying to plan well to get them up to speed.
"While we were trying to decide the new student's seat, Sara Husted offered to have the student sit next to her and her seat partner. Before I knew it, Sara was advocating for the student and came to me asking for Google classroom login, and to send her the invite for the coding online classroom and was showing the student how to do some things with coding.
"I am proud to see our Comets lead like this and I hope there is a way that we can recognize her for stepping up and helping a new student transition to our school. Whether that be a shout out or not, I would like you to be aware of this student being a great citizen without anyone requesting it. I am proud of the compassion, understanding and maturity that was on full display. I just wanted to recognize Sara Husted for this." ~ David Brown, Teacher

Then followed this accomplishment up with an impressive 192! This is outstanding scoring for high school competition! Great job, keep working hard and Go Comets!! - Coach David Brown

Given that the Jr/Sr High staff and students did not have enough time this week to prepare for exams, we are changing up the format of next week a bit. Please see our new schedule below:
Monday, 1/15: Students will be given an extra day of review in all of their classes.
Tuesday, 1/16-Thursday, 1/17: Students will be given exams in their classes. Teachers will be communicating on Monday to students and their parents what day(s) they are giving the exam in their classes. Families should expect emails from the teachers letting you know when to be prepared for the exam in each of their classes.
