The annual 6th grade Fall Bulb Project is well underway. 6th graders weighed, measured, and sketched their daffodil and narcissus bulbs before planting. Predictions were made on bloom size compared to bulb size. We learned that while narcissus is the genus name for daffodil, in the flower market narcissus refers to a bulb that will produce multi stems and flowers. Daffodils usually have only one flower per bulb unless the bulb splits. We are excited to see the labors of our work but have to wait until March or April. In the meantime, we will keep records of air and ground temperature until we see the first sprouts of Spring.
5th graders recently did group presentations on whether Michigan should send water to California or not to help address wildfires. Very interesting topic!

A few of our 5th grade NEHS students attended the Midland County Youth Leadership Conference. Students enjoyed learning about how and when to be kind, and that you can extend a helping hand to ANYONE -- not just your friends. They played a few different leadership and empathy-building games; some of which that they hope to participate in during the upcoming Kindness Week, which is November 11th-15th. Kindness Week is entirely student-planned and student-led, so keep an eye out for all the great activities they have planned! So proud of our young Comets for taking the initiative to #LEADLikeAComet!
Have you seen the daily elementary 'News Crew' videos on social media? With the help of Mrs. Klopf, it's almost entirely led by students! This year, News Crew is made up of 3rd and 4th graders. They have roles such as editor, producer, videographer, and anchor. Involved students all had the opportunity to apply for these roles, among other important jobs all throughout the building. Ms. Kendrick's kindergarten class had fun learning about magnets earlier this week! They worked on their reading and sentence structure as they learned about what magnet poles are and what they do.

More pictures of the 3rd graders working with Mr. Frisbee! They learned about animal classifications and got to go to 10 different stations to learn about different types of animals. There was a different activity to go with each one. Looks like they're having a blast!
On Count Day, Mrs. Shoultes and Mr. Templeman gave out gifts in a random drawing! Pictured are some kids picking prizes. They did one drawing in the morning and one in the afternoon, drawing two names per class each time. We also did a drawing for the Jr/Sr High School, 5 students per grade and these students came to the office and picked a drink, chips and candy bars from the selection provided. All just for coming to school!
Remember the book Caps for Sale? Mrs. Whittington's Kindergarteners took to the drawing board to determine where the monkeys might have gone at the end of the story. What's your guess?

The Readers to Leaders volunteers from Faith United Methodist Church in Coleman spent an afternoon last week training with Mrs. Linda Stachowiak in preparation for their work with Coleman Elementary School readers. We appreciate this dedicated group of volunteers who will be working with our students over the weeks of this school year to improve reading skills! Thank you!
