A big welcome to one of our newest additions to the Comet family, Mrs. Verna Caughel! Here's the rundown on one of our newest paraprofessionals:

- Why did you decide to become a paraprofessional?

I've been a Special Education ParaEducator for over 20 years in Genesee County. I truly enjoy being around students and assisting them with becoming the best that they can be and that looks different for every student.

- Do you have any prior connection with this school district or community?

I came to Coleman because my daughter, son-in-law and 2 of my grandkids moved here about 3 years ago. We all just wanted to get out of the city. I moved here almost a year ago. I had a "mother-in-law suite" built onto their house. It has been wonderful living here. Also, two of my grandkids, Lily and Chris are Coleman Comets and are excited that they get to see me at school!!!

- What drew you to this opportunity?

I took an early retirement 8 months ago. It was wonderful to take the time to get moved and settle in, but I missed getting up every day and being surrounded by kids. I love watching the students grow and learning new things. Being a part of that is very rewarding.

- What's a skill or topic you're learning about right now in your personal life?

Right now I'm learning all I can about homesteading.  I have grown vegetables basically all my life and I know how to can and preserve them. We want to add animals to our homestead, so that's what I'm concentrating on right now.

- What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I love to spend time with my kids and grandkids.  I like to garden, sew, embroidery, doing just about anything outside, thrift shopping and going to yard sales.

- What adjectives would you use to describe yourself?

Adjectives to describe myself; loving, thoughtful, compassionate, humorous or at least the kids say I'm silly, and hardworking.

- What's your secret talent?

I think my secret talent is finding a way to make do with what I have. My parents taught me to be resourceful and use what you have on hand. From cooking to crafts to outdoor projects, I'm pretty good at making something from next to nothing.
