It literally takes one minute and provides you with an accurate estimate of the increase to your property taxes should the bond pass. It is important that you check this out for yourself instead of getting information from other people; everyone's income, township and estimated property tax increase is different. Several people were told their taxes would go up many hundreds of dollars, but after using the tax calculator, found it was much less than they had been told originally. Be informed before you vote. Q: Do we have "trades" classes for Coleman Schools' students? A: YES! We certainly do. Coleman Community Schools are part of the Midland County Career-Technical Education (CTE) Consortium offering 18+ programs to high school students, one of them being our own Agriscience Program. CTE courses are what used to be referred to as the "trades". Q: How will I know how much I would be paying in taxes per month if this bond were to pass? A: You can go to the Bond link at the top of the District Homepage www.colemanschools.net. In that page is a Tax Calculator (also at this link: https://pfmtaxcalc.com/ColemanCommunitySchools/disclaimer.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fColemanCommunitySchools%2fdefault.aspx ) which will determine the highest calculation for your property taxes by year, month and day. Some mills of this total calculation will fall off over time, reducing the amount of taxes per taxpayer. This tax calculator information is ONLY seen by the person entering the information.
Q: How does our district’s debt levy compare to the schools around us? A: Most school districts in Michigan address facility and transportation needs with a bond or sinking fund proposal. Currently, as is illustrated by the chart, Coleman is levying the lowest amount of many schools in the area and our size. If this bond proposal is approved on August 3rd, our total mills would increase to an estimated average rate of 7.55 mills over the term of the bond. This would still put us under or even with what at least 6 other local districts our size levy, inclusive of those in the image provided as well as Meridian, Bullock Creek and Harrison which are levying 7 mills, 7 mills and 4.3 mills, respectively.
First, second and third graders are working on their reading skills in the SPARKS Summer Program. They have some guided reading time with the teachers, some silent reading time with books of their choice to practice the skills taught during the guided reading time and then they have a chance to read cards and build sentences. The "Kids Read Now" students are integrated on Tuesdays to work on these skills as well.

Q: Why is a new auditorium necessary? A: The current auditorium, as with all of the school, has been well cared for by the community, staff and students at Coleman and used to the greatest extent possible. The roof, boilers, office area and carpeting has been replaced over time. However, after generations of use, items are worn and the space fits needs of the community and learners from several generations previous, not those of today. Coleman Schools is fortunate to have many people involved and supporting our students at events. No matter how many chairs are put in the auditorium and cafeteria for elementary or jr./sr. high events, there are typically 80-90 people left standing. The current auditorium does not provide enough storage and changing space for drama, choir, band. All other spaces in the district are smaller than the current auditorium. A new auditorium would provide the necessary space for all attendees to sit in tiered seating for elementary, jr./sr. high and community events, being able to see and hear what is taking place on stage. More events could be held in our own facilities and students can learn in the space daily for band, choir, drama and other presentation practices. Each of these groups would have space for materials and equipment that is not available presently. Additional community events could be held in a new space because of the area available. At the same end of the building, some additional classroom space would be added to support future programs and the band/choir/arts classrooms. Some of our 5th-12th grade Summer Extended Learning students have chosen to experience a variety of electives throughout the summer. They have been part of a Table Top Virtual Welder Competition with Merrill Institute, dance instructions with Mrs. Tallman, learned about Career-Technical Education (CTE) classes with Mr. Johnson and resume writing and saving money with Mr. Falor so far. This week they are learning skills in Horticulture/Landscaping with Mr. Kalitta. This funds for the Horticulture/Landscaping projects came from a grant with the Midland Area Community Foundation where students and community members work together to create curb appeal and beautify the town. These 5th -8th grade students are also able to use Exact Path on the computer to build reading and math skills specifically tailored to them at school and home and our 9th-12th grade students are involved in extra classes over the summer both in person and virtually.

Some exciting news! We have been able, with some of the federal funding we received this year, to purchase enough Chromebooks to be 1:1 for students. The District Curriculum Committee has been talking with teachers and we will be planning just what 1:1 will look like based on the grade level of students and a multi-year plan for teaching students how best to use the devices. We'll be sharing that information out as we get closer to next year. Just a quick reminder if your child(ren) are in the Online Learning Academy or in quarantine or have borrowed a Chromebook/charger at any time this year that has not yet been returned, please bring that to the school. We will have staff available late today, Friday, June 4th from 3-4:30 p.m. and Monday, June 7th from 9-noon. Even if your child will be in a summer program, they should still be returned first and then we will reassign Chromebooks. You can return other days through next week as well when secretaries are in the office. Students then picked four plants and wrote three characteristics about each one and tried to name the plant. A nice place to visit on a chilly, rainy day.

Coleman Schools' high school students have the opportunity to join one of 18+ programs (shown here)in Career-Technical Education (CTE) through Midland County, including our own Agriscience Program . Many of these were formerly known as Trades courses. Students remain enrolled in their home school (Coleman) and attend the CTE program 2 hours per day. Coleman Schools' is proud to offer courses for those interested in Career and College courses. Everyone has an interest in something. We are so looking forward to having students return to in-person learning on January 25th, 2021. This will include all of our students who are currently remote as well as those who were in the Online Learning Academy and are coming back to in-person. To be prepared for the second semester, it is still important to wrap up the first semester. Please remind your children the importance of getting all of their work turned back in this week and completed. Grades can be seen in the Parent Connect system, but please remind your child if they just completed things, it will take a bit for teachers to get those things graded. Some of those things, especially at the Jr./Sr. High grade level may be past due and not receive full credit as those students are older. Those who submit all their work at once instead of when it was due, may have to wait a bit to have it graded. Should you or your child have ANY questions at all, please reach out to your child's teacher or the school office. Chromebook Devices and Chargers can be returned/checked-in at the dates and times below. If you are unable to drop them off due to work, students can bring them back to the office first thing on January 25th. The more devices we can bring in on Jan. 21st and 22nd, the quicker we can get them checked in, wiped down and cleaned and in to the classrooms for use by the students. Devices should NOT be returned until your child has submitted all of their work for the 1st semester. Devices can be turned in at the elementary or jr./sr. high, regardless of which school your child attends. With all students receiving free meals, families may feel it is not important to return a free and reduced application or Household Information Report. Free & Reduced applications and Household Information Reports are used for more than just Food Service. Students and schools both benefit from approved free & reduced apps/HIR on file. Students that are approved for free or reduced priced meals may be eligible to receive help with home internet, college applications fees and financial aid, etc. Students also benefit when the schools benefit! Schools depend on free and reduced applications and HIR to determine the amount of funding they receive from a variety of State and Federal supplement programs like Title I, At-Risk, Title II, E-Rate, etc. These programs have the potential to offer support and services for our students including but not limited to: ● Technology (Chromebooks, internet services, etc.) ● Instructional support (staff, supplies & materials, etc.) ● Non-instructional Services (counseling, social work, health service, etc.) ● Professional Learning for staff ● Parent and Community engagement supplies and activities - such as field trips Even if your child/children do not intend on eating meals from our food service department, it is still critical that families return a free and reduced application or HIR. Good Afternoon & Happy Thanksgiving! I just wanted to end the week with a couple of pieces of information for all of you. First of all, THANK YOU to our students who are doing an amazing job signing on to the Live Streams/Google Meets and completing assignments during distance learning. We have been highly impressed with attendance and your energy. Keep it up! Please remember that all teachers will have all grading up to date on Dec. 4th in Skyward for your child. If you have not already, please read through the Grading Guidelines During Distance Learning that was sent in the packet last week. Students must keep in contact with their teachers and lack of participation in their chosen method does not excuse them from completing assignments. It details information about when assignments need to be submitted based on whether they are online or paper copy learners and the amount of credit a child will lose if turned in late. We have also been able to make arrangements starting Monday, 11.30 for those who typically have bus routes and ordered food (through the survey link in the packets). These buses will also deliver paper copies for those already assigned paper copies. Students cannot change to paper copies at this point. The buses will leave the Jr./Sr. High at 12:30 p.m. each Monday during the distance learning and arrive at homes between 12:30-2:00 p.m. Someone should be watching for the bus and this will be a contactless drop-offs where items will be left on a porch or in a driveway. Those without a typical bus route and Online Learning Academy families will continue to pick up both food and school work at the side entrance of the Jr./Sr. High on Mondays from 3-5:00 p.m. Have a fantastic weekend!

There will be no school for our K-12 students Monday, Nov. 16th. All students will return to school on Tuesday, Nov. 17th. This is following the Governor's announcement at 6:00 p.m. tonight. Staff will still report tomorrow in order to address the new order, determine plans for our Jr./Sr. High and our Elementary students. The last day in-person for our Jr./Sr. High students for at least 3 weeks will be Tuesday, Nov. 17th and they will move to remote learning on Wed., Nov. 18th. We will make determinations on how we will proceed with K-6 in-person learning tomorrow. Further detail on both will be shared with you as soon as we are able tomorrow. CES will celebrate Halloween COVID-style from 2-3PM on Friday, October 30 with individual classroom parties. Students are invited to bring simple costumes for parties. We ask that students are able to manage costume pieces completely on their own. Please refrain from bringing items that would require adult assistance to put on, put together, etc. All students must continue to wear a fabric face covering during the classroom celebration unless they are seated at their desk eating and/or drinking. We are looking forward to our celebration of Halloween!
The Midland County Health Department will provide immunizations to those students in need of them on Nov. 10th in the afternoon. Online Learning Academy students need to contact the office to be scheduled for an after school appointment time. In-Person students will be called down when it is their turn and elementary students will be escorted to the Jr./Sr. High at their time. Parents/guardians are not required to be present, but a consent form like the one seen here must be signed and given to the school office prior to treatment. All student immunizations or a waiver must be up-to-date no later than Nov. 11th.

Liz recently was hired to coach JV Volleyball and offered to fill in with JH Volleyball this year during a leave. The Governor has recently signed into law a bill recognizing one of our own, a Comet Alum. House Bill 5334 amends the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of US-10 in Warren Township in Midland County in honor of Corporal Casey P. Zylman. Corporal Zylman grew up in Midland County and was a graduate of Coleman High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 2005 and was killed in May 25, 2007 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while driving in Tallafar, Iraq. He was 22 years old. The highway will be known as the "Cpl. Casey P. Zylman Memorial Highway." The bill was sponsored by Representative Roger Hauck, R-Beal City. We are proud of our Comet Alum, Cpl. Good Afternoon, This is Coleman Community Schools' Superintendent, Jen McCormack. Happy Labor Day Weekend! Thank you all for a great start to the school year with in-person and online students participating and signing in on time, connecting with us and following the rules for safety. We've been really impressed and let's keep that up this coming week. The students and staff faired far better than our tents placed at the two buildings for outdoor lessons, but we are working to resolve that issue, too. We really appreciate having you back. I wanted to share with you a couple pieces of great news that you may have already heard a little bit about. This past Wednesday, the USDA announced an extension of federal food and nutrition waivers through December 31, or when funding runs out, whichever comes first. While our Elementary students were already receiving FREE breakfast and lunch through our qualified CEP program, Jr./Sr. High students were only receiving a free breakfast. Due to this extension, ALL K-12 students, both online and in-person will be provided with a FREE breakfast AND lunch during this extension. Online students need to sign up at the link already provided to parents. It will be HIGHLY important that all families fill out the Household Report/Free &Reduced Application. When we do revert back to our regular school lunch program, your students Free and Reduced status based on these forms, will be in effect again. The Title funding the school receives from the applications are very important. Title provides funding for paraprofessionals, classroom books, training, tech devices, tech support,field trips, homeless student support and more on an annual basis. If you have not yet sent in your application/household report, please do so now. We want to ensure that your student is being charged accordingly when we go back to our regular program and that we continue to receive as much Title funding as possible to support our students and their programs. With regard to Athletics, on Friday, Executive Order 2020-176 was released late in the day allowing competition to begin immediately, allowing volleyball to begin indoors and football to begin starting this coming week. All football teams will be placed in the first round of playoffs per MHSAA. With this announcement, strict guidelines for spectators and safety are in place. Only two (2) spectators will be allowed per participant and Coleman Schools will be requiring participants list those people prior to events, both home and away. Social distancing will be expected as well as masks when spectators are in close contact (within 6 ft.) and indoors. Scheduling and other details are in progress as area Athletic Directors meet and will be released as we have them. This is exciting news for our student athletes and the community! We are working to determine if rules will be relaxed and we are able to Livestream the games to you. More to come on that. While football will resume, we are postponing Homecoming at this time due to the fact that all Homecoming activities would not likely be able to happen at this time under the orders. Also, in order to ensure cleanliness and emphasize safety for our district and visiting student athletes, district athletic facilities will still remain closed to outside organizations. Please watch for more detail on the rules we will need to follow in order to continue athletics for our students and thanks in advance for your working with us on this. Finally, for those who are transported on district buses, please keep in mind that student drop-off/pick-up is limited to only custodial/guardian stops that you have established for your child with the Transportation Department and Mr. Cowell. Students are only allowed to ride to custodial/guardian stops and not to friends' homes. This is especially important this year as we are reducing the co-mingling of students on buses during the pandemic and ensuring we can contact trace should there be an issue. This is more secure than Zoom and others, especially when we will likely have students in the Open House. It is free to sign up and just takes a few minutes by Googling "Create a Gmail account" and following the steps. During the Virtual Open House you can join and leave the meetings to join other teachers during the time allotted as you need to. Teachers will be sharing information and answering questions. If you are unable to join the Virtual Open House, as happens for some with the in-person Open House, information will also be available via email by contacting your child's teacher or sent home on the first day of school. Welcome to a couple of new faces you will be seeing around Coleman Schools. In the Food Services Department, Melissa Gohl will be the new Food Services Director. Graduation will be held tomorrow, August 2nd, in two (2) different sessions due to State Executive Orders limiting attendance to only 100 people total outdoors at the event. Each graduate will have 2 parents/guests and can determine one additional carload of people who will meet at the Family Center but will need to remain in cars. We wish times were different we were able to hold graduation as usual for our graduates. A message is being sent to seniors/parents in just a few minutes with reminders for the day and a little more information. If you are a community member and would like to watch or hear the graduation, below are some ways to do so. Graduation starts at: 2:00 p.m. for graduates with last names beginning with A-H 3:00 p.m. for graduates with last names beginning with J-Z We have been able to also add a radio station to broadcast tomorrow’s events. You can tune in to 93.9 for both graduations. It can also be viewed on You Tube at: https://youtu.be/uZQ-HBgu60Q where it will be Live Streamed on a 20-second delay. Immunization clinics for school children will be held at the Midland County Health Department on August 20, 21 and 25-28. We understand that many children may be behind and the Health Department is willing to do anything they can to meet the needs of families.
RETURN TO LEARN/MULTIPLE OPTIONS: As we work to answer as many Return-to-Learn questions for the 2020-2021 school year as possible, we are hosting two upcoming Zoom meetings for in-district families. Please email Mrs. McCormack at least 15 minutes prior to each meeting to receive the invite. Include your name, your child's name and which meeting invite you are requesting. The Zoom Meetings will be held at 4:30 p.m.: Thursday, July 30th- Return to School Parent UpdateWednesday, August 5th- Return-to-Learn Preparedness & Response Plan Questions Answered. Coleman Community Schools is excited that we are currently in Phase 4 of the State's Roadmap. We also recognize that some families and students have health and other concerns during this time and are hesitant to return to in-person learning. We are pleased to be able to offer a completely remote education option to students in grades K-12 for the 2020-2021 school year. Students enrolled in this program are still Coleman Community Schools students, and still have access to CCS resources, but will only participate virtually for academic content. A Chromebook will be provided. If you are interested in a long term (semester or full year) online only option, please complete the enrollment form at this link: https://forms.gle/KQQ5HJyvBrEnwYBd6 . Students in this online only option must complete at least one full semester online. This must be completed no later than August 9th, 2020.
