From the Desk of the Superintendent, Keely Mounger

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year! I want to welcome back our returning students and families and extend a very special welcome to new students and families joining our Coleman Community Schools family. We are ready for an exciting and productive year!

There are so many positive things to share. As you are probably aware, the county-wide enhancement millage passed on May 5, 2009. Thank you again for your support of this extremely important millage. Coleman Schools will receive approximately 1.5 million dollars over the next five years. This year’s $300,000 is being spent as promised on buses, protecting class size, facilities improvements, textbooks and technology. Specifically, we purchased one brand new bus and one “gently used” bus, we were able to keep all teachers on staff with no lay-offs and hire two new part time teachers, the Jr./Sr. High School lockers have been painted, new Social Studies and Science textbooks were purchased across all grade levels, and there are numerous technology upgrades, including a new Elementary lab and new computers for our teachers.

More good news for Coleman Schools this summer was the rapid settlement of a two year teacher contract and a two year support staff contract. Often times negotiations take many months and even years to settle. We are fortunate to have dedicated employees who genuinely believe in our mission to serve children and families. Working together we were able to settle in just a few short weeks.

Our Board of Education members have all returned. Four members ran unopposed in May. I am grateful for their continued service and exceptional leadership. In this publication you will find a schedule of our Board of Education meetings for 2009-2010. You are invited and encouraged to attend.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 created some additional funding for school districts this year. Coleman was able to purchase 19 new digital projectors to be placed in classrooms in both buildings. This technology will open up many teaching and learning opportunities. Additionally, a new updated version of the “Success Maker” program was purchased and installed in the newly updated Elementary computer lab. This is an excellent program that will be accessed by all students at the Elementary.

If you have questions, comments or suggestions at any time, please feel free to contact me. My door is open and I welcome your feedback. It is my pleasure to serve as Superintendent of Coleman Community Schools. Thank you for your continued support.
